Seven-Eleven Japan Switches the Currently Used Sandwich Packages to Ones That Use Less Plastic
By replacing the parts of the sandwich packages that use film materials with proprietary materials, the amount of plastic used can be reduced by about 40%. Seven-Eleven Japan, a major convenience store chain in Japan, headquartered in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, and headed by President Fumihiko Nagamatsu, has been switching the currently used sandwich packages to ones that use less plastic, since July 27, at stores in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, and Chiba prefectures. By replacing the parts of the sandwich packages that use film materials with proprietary materials, the amount of plastic used can be reduced by about 40%.
The Seven-Eleven group has set an environmental declaration entitled "GREEN CHALLENGE 2050" and has set goals to be achieved by 2050. Concerning the packages used in their original products, they are switching to packages using biodegradable recycled materials and environmentally friendly materials such as paper.
From May 2021, the package film of hand-rolled rice balls has been thinned, and since July 2021, the material of the band film for bento boxes has been changed to recycled pets.
The sandwich package change this time is expected to reduce about 1000 tons of petroleum-derived plastics annually compared to 2013. |
